Another gynaecologist starts at SMMC today

~ Three now operating in St. Maarten~

CAY HILL--The number of gynaecologists operating in St. Maarten is now back to three with the addition of Dutch gynaecologist Dr. Marieke Houwert to the pool of specialists.

Houwert starts operating at St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) from today, Wednesday, for an initial period of one month. She has worked in St. Maarten before as one of the rotating gynaecologists who had been operating in St. Maarten last year and earlier this year.

Houwert arrived in St. Maarten on Tuesday. Her tenure at SMMC follows the departure of Dutch Gynaecologist Dr. Diederik Smit who agreed to terminate his working relationship with SMMC last week following an operating theatre incident two Sundays ago.

SMMC Human Resources/Communications Manager Julitte Hassell told The Daily Herald on Tuesday that SMMC will be working with Houwert to see if she can stay in St. Maarten longer than the initial period of one month, but SMMC is pleased that Houwert could make herself available at such short notice.

She said the main objective is to have a permanent specialist here to serve the community. She said, however, that the reality has to be taken into consideration. Attracting specialists to work in St. Maarten is a challenge because of the size of the medical facility and because certain advanced procedures are not performed in St. Maarten.

New specialists, she said, are often interested in advancing their careers while seasoned specialists who have advanced in their profession, usually find it difficult to come to a small hospital to perform basic care in their respective specialties.

She said SMMC hopes to attract specialists who are willing to expand.

The other gynaecologists operating in St. Maarten are Dr. Randall Friday and Dr. Dorette Courtar. There are also three midwives.
