PHILIPSBURG--The large audience inside L.B. Scott Sports Auditorium was treated to tumbles, cartwheels, grand jetés, glittered tutus, jazz hands and urban hip-hop moves as Motiance Dance School held its 27th annual Dance Recital on June 9 and 10.
Titled "Vignette," the recital began at 5:00pm with a viewing of historical footage of Motiance Dance School founder Cees van Dolderen performing in a show himself. The programme began with toddler dancers showing off their tumbling and gymnastic skills. Guided by their instructors Jennifer Halley and Caroline Belzer, the young dancers showcased handstands and gymnastic positions for the very lithe.
Musical theatre also played a part in the recital as renditions of nursery rhymes "Yankee Doodle" and "Row Your Boat" were performed with audience members singing along.
The recital also played homage to classic and new Disney movies like "Aladdin," "Prince of Egypt" and "Tangled." Dancers wearing hip scarves with dangling silver coins performed a harem dance depicting the atmosphere of the movie Aladdin, followed by a musical theatre interpretation of "A Whole New World" and "Prince Ali" complete with a life-size elephant costume and the prince himself on stilts.
Kyanni Atmopawiro showed off her vocal talent by singing Prince of Egypt's "When You Believe" and Tangled's "I See the Light." St. Dominic Primary School pupils performed a St. Maarten rumba dressed in bright green, yellow and red T-shirts.
The hip-hop and jazz genres were represented by today's hit songs like "Hands Up" by Jennifer Lopez, "Whip my Hair" by Willow Smith and Santogold's "You'll find a Way" remix. Dancers sported ripped blue and pink tights, metallic tights and printed off-the-shoulder shirts embracing the urban feel.
The energetic and colourful show ended with ballet pieces and five dances by Jonathan Livingston Seagull. Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams was also in attendance.
