HOPE ESTATE--The distribution of student ID cards got underway Friday with Civil Registry head Leona Romeo-Marlin explaining to Genevieve De Weever Primary School pupils the importance of having their identification cards, as required by law.
The Ministry of General Affairs in collaboration with the Ministry of Education launched its "Identify Me" (ID-Me) school campaign on Wednesday, to be executed by the Civil Registry Department. The campaign is to ensure that all registered children 12 years and older have in their possession the national ID cards.
Romeo-Marlin explained to the children why they should take care of their ID cards and the importance of the cards in identifying them as legally registered residents of St. Maarten. She thanked Genevieve De Weever Primary School manager Rita Bourne-Gumbs for her cooperation and expressed the hope that other schools would cooperate with the Civil Registry in giving their pupils/students their ID cards.
Other schools that received cards on Friday were Sundial School, St. Dominic Primary, and the MAC Campus in Philipsburg. Distribution of the cards also will take place on Monday, June 4. Two MAC campuses, St. Maarten Academy PSVE, Charles Leopold Bell School and Leonard Conner School will receive the cards on that day.
These schools have been cooperating with the Civil Registry in proving the consent forms to the parents and in collecting the necessary NAf. 15 fees, relevant documents and passport pictures. As a convenience to the parents and children, Civil Registry staff members collect the information directly from the school and return with the ID cards.
If the child does not have Dutch nationality, the parents will have to provide a copy of the residence permit. Parents can ask the school directorate for information or contact the Civil Registry.
The programme will continue until the summer holidays and restart when the 2012-2013 school year commences.
