EMS stages live accident drills

page13b030PHILIPSBURG--Emergency Medical Services (EMS) organised a live drill/demonstration on W.J.A. Nisbeth Road on Wednesday morning, June 20, as part of its annual EMS Week.

The drill between the Government Administration Building and the Post Office began around 9:00am. Medical students, volunteers and EMS members re-enacted real life scenarios involving car accidents, wounds, deaths and how emergency response teams act accordingly.

Actual damaged cars were used in the drill. Some onlookers even were asked to play roles in the re-enactments as family members and members of the media.

Fire Department personnel demonstrated procedures for removing persons from cars using the "jaws of life." EMS demonstrated how a victim is placed on a stretcher and carried to the ambulance and how those declared dead-on-the-scene were dealt with.

The theme for EMS Week 2012 is "EMS: More than a job, a Calling."
