Curfew in Karandeniya

A police curfew has been imposed in the southern town of Karandeniya after angry mobs attacked the homes of two persons arrested in connection with the recent killing of a family doctor in the area, officials said a short while ago.

The dusk to dawn curfew was been treated seriously and commandos from the elite Special Task Force (STF) has been moved into the area to assist the local police in maintaining law and order, they said.

At least four buildings that include two private residences, a shop and a medical laboratory owned by the suspects were torched by the angry mobs.

A serving army officer and another person was taken into custody and are currently been held on a Detention Order.

Meanwhile the Inspector General of Police (IGP) N. K. Illangakoon is scheduled to visit the area later today.
