PHILIPSBURG--Dutch St. Maarten Taxi Association, Airport Taxi Association, Harbour Taxi Association and Genesis Taxi Association have written a letter to Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Telecommunication and Public Transportation Romeo Pantophlet concerning the existing public transportation system.
The letter requests an urgent meeting to "discuss the organising, regulating and protecting of public transportation 'Taxis' to improve the quality of service offered to visitors of St. Maarten."
"All associations are involved and we are hoping to achieve something to regulate these issues," Dutch St. Maarten Taxi Association President Ottis Hughes told this newspaper.
Some of the points of concern they are hoping will be discussed with the minister are a moratorium on taxi permits, passing of a law against "gypsy" operators, training, improving identification of public transportation operators and a structured tax system for taxis.
The associations were not pleased with the manner in which 62 taxi licences were distributed May 8-10 by outgoing minister of transportation Franklin Meyers.
The letter was delivered to the minister on June 18.
