PHILIPSBURG--Government is "working hard to bridge the gap and minimise the length and effects of the low season on the economy," said Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams at the presentation of the report entitled "Towards a Strong Economy of St. Maarten."
The report was commissioned on recommendation of the Committee for Financial Supervision CFT and executed by University of St. Martin (USM).
It focuses on making the country's infrastructure more attractive to minimise the difference between high and low tourism seasons, thus strengthening the economy and the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to a press release from the PM's cabinet.
Wescot-Williams said she will peruse the report's recommendations together government's ideas for compilation in a plan, "We can all agree to and execute to strengthen the economy.
"We have sought various approaches to minimise and deal with the so-called tourist low season and this is a significant step in that direction," she added.
The report was presented to Wescot-Williams and Tourism and Economic Affairs Minister Romeo Pantophlet by St. Maarten's representative on the CFT Board Richard Gibson Sr. and USM President Annelies van den Assem.
The Prime Minister, on behalf of the Council of Ministers, thanked CFT and USM for their work.
