The growth rate of the international passenger movement even surpasses that of the total outbound passenger movement namely 9.5 per cent to 8.6 per cent, translating into the best showing of international passenger movement in the past 5 years.

The growth recorded in the international passenger movement can be attributed to the strong passenger growth of a number of airlines including: JetBlue which filled the void left by American Eagle moving 10,012 passengers in the first quarter or a 77.0 per cent growth, LIAT with 6,061 or 37.0 per cent, Air Caraïbes with 5,378 pax or 126.5 per cent, American Airlines with 3,418 or 9.2 per cent and Copa airlines with 1,561 or 79.0 percent growth.

Domestic passengers decreased by 3.8 per cent solely as a result of the restructuring of DAE with a sharp decrease in domestic flights to Curaçao namely down by 54 flights or 63.5 per cent therefore resulting in a decrease in domestic passenger movement by 1,849 passengers or 77.9 per cent. Both Insel Air and Winair recorded a growth in domestic passengers of respectively 5.4 per cent and 3.8 per cent for the first quarter of 2012 in comparison to the same period in 2011.

Three of the five markets that St. Maarten serves also recorded growth for the first quarter of this year when compared to the preceding four years. The Canadian market is particularly very strong with a growth of 32.9 per cent and the North American market also recording double digit growth of 13.2 per cent.

Sun Wing charter (with four flights weekly out of Toronto, Canada) is in principle responsible for the growth of 32.9 per cent in the Canadian market with also double digit growth being recorded by Sun Country and Can Jet as well. Mainly responsible for the double digit growth in the North American market were United and Jet Blue, Copa headed the growth in the South American market, Air Caraïbes was mainly responsible for the European Market and LIAT took charge of the Caribbean market.

Regarding the ranking of airlines based on volume of passengers that they render as airlift out of St. Maarten, the top five airlines have remained consistent over the past five years. American Airlines has remained steadfast in the leading role as the main airlift provider out of St. Maarten with JetBlue moving into the fourth slot on the list and knocking LIAT (who was also consistently in the 5th position over the past four years) now out of the top five.

US Airways now occupy a strong second spot on the Airlines per enplaned passenger list with Winair and Air France following suit in respectively the third, and fifth position.
