Parliament meets on resort workers today

PHILIPSBURG--Parliament will meet about the employment status of workers at Simpson Bay Resort, formerly Pelican Resort, today, Thursday at 2:00pm in Parliament House. The meeting is public and will be aired live on St. Maarten Cable TV Channel 20.

The request for this urgent meeting made by the National Alliance (NA) Members of Parliament was sent to the Parliament Secretariat via e-mail on November 10 just before 5:00pm, according to a parliament press release. The signed letter was received on Monday, November 14.

The party did not mention the name of the resort in its request. The letter only stated that it wanted to "meet on developments surrounding the dismissal of over 100 employees at one of the resorts in St. Maarten and the effects on the individuals in question and their families."

The party said the reason for the urgency of the request is because more than 100 families have been affected by the decision of the management of the resort in question, to terminate the services of its employees."
