COLE BAY--Officers in the Police Motorcycle Brigade were able to show off some of their riding skills on Friday after several days of training.
The unit is expected to begin functioning officially in the very near future. The brigade's job description will include the escorting of public officials and other important persons, and traffic controls.
"We want to inform the general public of the improvement. ... The motorcycle unit will be trained specially to do all types of transport. ... This is a very advanced training that we are getting from the Netherlands," said police spokesman Inspector Ricardo Henson.
Leading the training is Inspector Michel Menning of the Netherlands Police Force. Menning also works for PROCentrum, an organisation that specialises in training police officers in advanced car and motorcycle driving skills.
Officers following the two-week training have been divided into two groups of five and one of six. The training covers advanced handling of motorcycles, how to notice road risks, leading motorcades and traffic control.
After a few words about the training from Inspector Henson the officers were able to show some of what they had learned.
Menning said, "They are good drivers; they like it. They smile when they drive on the motorcycles."
Asked whether the time given was enough to complete all the areas of training, Menning said, "In one week ? that is very short ? but we have tried to cover everything, because the roads were wet and driving here is a problem. You have to watch the traffic, because traffic on this island is very dangerous. ... We have very big holes in the road. ...
"And then when you drive with a motorcycle it is more dangerous, because when you get an accident you have a problem. With cars you have airbags, etc."
