Age Bakker appointed as CFT new chairman

THE HAGUE--Dutch Professor Dr. Age Bakker (61) has been named to succeed the late Professor Hans Weitenberg as chairman of the Committee for Financial Supervision CFT. The chairmanship has been vacant since September 1, when Weitenberg stepped down due to health reasons. Shortly after, he passed away.

The Kingdom Council of Ministers nominated Bakker to Queen Beatrix on Friday, after deciding on him as the nominee that day. The letter to the queen is a formality in the process.

With the nomination of Bakker as CFT chairman, the Kingdom Council of Ministers "perpetuates the course that has been deployed by Professor Weitenberg, because Professor Bakker is also known for his expertise on content and judgments," according to a CFT press statement.

Bakker will be chairman of the CFT board for Curaao and St. Maarten as well as that for Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba, called BES.

Bakker joins Margo Vliegenthart representing the Netherlands, Alberto Romero (Curaao) and Richard Gibson Sr. (St. Maarten) on the CFT board for Curaao and St. Maarten. For the board for BES, he will work with Vliegenthart and Max Pandt (BES).

Until last month, Bakker was an administrator with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington D.C. In that position, he was a member of the daily management at the IMF on behalf of the Dutch Kingdom. Within the IMF, the kingdom's administrator looks after the interests of the Netherlands, Curaao, Aruba, St. Maarten and other countries such as Israel, Cyprus and some other Eastern European countries.

Bakker has studied in Grenoble, in Amsterdam and at Stanford University in the United States. He is an expert on Social Economic and Monetary Policy.

Since 1995, he has been a Professor of Monetary and Banking Matters at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He made his career at the Dutch Central Bank (De Nederlandsche Bank) and has been a crown member of the Social Economic Council SER for 12 years.
