PHILIPSBURG--The Detective Department has arrested three men in connection with abductions that led to persons being shot at and tortured.
The police formed a special team in December 2010 to investigate two separate cases of abduction. The first case took place between December 16 and 17. The victim N.O.M.A. was abducted by four men from the Billy Folly area. The victim's home was broken into and many items stolen. The suspects then took the victim to an undisclosed location, where he was tortured for some time.
The following day, whilst the suspects were transporting the victim to another location, he saw an opportunity to escape and ran into a popular establishment on A.J.C. Brouwer Road in Cul de Sac.
The second abduction case took place on January 3. The victim in this case was R.L.M. This offence also was perpetrated in the Billy Folly area. The suspects handcuffed the victim and pushed him into the car they were driving. A white SUV belonging to the victim was also taken. While the victim was being transported he escaped by jumping out of the vehicle. The suspects fired at him several times, but none of the shots hit him.
The police and detectives were informed of the situation immediately and started a search for the suspects. The victim's vehicle was found abandoned later on and confiscated for further investigation.
The investigation by the special detective team so far has led to the arrest of three suspects: R.E.G., I.E.J. and N.E.B., all of St. Maarten. The investigation also indicates that these suspects may be involved in both cases. They remain in custody as the investigation continues.
