PHILIPSBURG--Minister of Infrastructure Theo Heyliger will break ground on February 15 to signal the start of the Middle Region upgrading project.
A kick-off meeting was held on Monday afternoon between all stakeholders in the project, including Head of New Projects, Development and Planning Kurt Ruan; Jeroen Thielmans and Gilberto Croes, representing the contracting authority USONA; representatives of contractor MNO which will be executing the work; and Lenny Priest, President of the Middle Region and Defiance Community Council. Also present in the meeting were representatives from GEBE, Cable TV, UTS and TelEM.
The project is being financed by the 9th EDF (European Development Funds) through USONA to the tune of 4.8 million euros. When completed, residents of Middle Region will have a brand new main road, sidewalks on both sides of the road, proper drainage under the road, street lights, underground cabling and all homes along the road will be connected to the sewage system.
The construction of the main road, which spans 1,500 kilometers, will be executed in segments to ease the inconvenience of residents and ensure that project details (underground cabling etc.) are done effectively. The entire project should take about 18 months to complete.
A town hall meeting will be held within the coming two weeks to inform residents of the district about the details of the project and how it will affect them directly.
Ruan said government is looking forward to the cooperation of the residents in order to complete the project in the stipulated time.
He explained that with EDF funding, projects must be completed within a certain time frame or government risks losing the financing. "We have to complete the project in the stipulated time, so the funds could be used as efficiently as possible, so we are looking forward to good cooperation," Ruan said.
