PHILIPSBURG--The Court of First Instance found a man from Dominica guilty of having taken part in the March 7, 2011, armed robbery of Bada Bing nightclub in Simpson Bay, and sentenced him to prison Thursday.
Kenny D. Douglas (35) was sentenced in absentia to 30 months with reduction of time already spent, which was equal to Prosecutor Gonda van der Wulp's demand.
Judge Monique Keppels found it legally and convincingly proven that Douglas had committed the "inside job" together with nightclub bookkeeper Ramona Lupu and partner in crime Jimmey D. Ramsahai.
Lupu and Ramsahai stood trial in January. Ramsahai, who has filed an appeal in the meantime, was sentenced to 36 months. Lupu received 30 months, 10 of which were suspended, with three years' probation.
Like Douglas, both also were ordered to pay the nightclub owner equal shares of US $18,346 in damages, consisting of the stolen money and legal fees.
Together the three had planned the robbery during which a security guard was robbed of a bag containing the nightclub's $18,346 proceeds of the Heineken Regatta weekend.
Douglas worked as a chef at a well-known restaurant in Cole Bay at that time. He held the security guard at gunpoint near Bada Bing, in the vicinity of Sister Regina Road, shortly after the guard had left the club together with Lupu to take the money to the bank.
"I am surprised that somebody with a good job like Douglas was led into temptation to commit a crime like this," Prosecutor van der Wulp stated. She informed the Court that she considered 36 months a suitable punishment. The Prosecutor took into account the fact that the case had been solved through Douglas' cooperation with police investigations.
He was arrested March 11 and released from detention on May 9 due to lack of cell space. Douglas then returned to his native Dominica. He didn't have a criminal record.
