ralph watchi -Nothing has changed in Lebanon. Mr. Charbel Nahas who was right in his refusal to sign a bill is out. And Mr. Najib Mikati who threatened to resign if the bill was not signed is still in charge. The article titled “Charbel Nahas: The end of an experiment?” published on February 23, 2012 in the Alakhbar journal, gives us a detailed description of the events that led to the resignation of Mr. Nahas. The standoff between Mr. Mikati and Mr. Nahas was brought to the attention of the State Council, who warned the cabinet that signing the bill was in violation of the Law. So Mr. Mikati drafted a decree to be amended by the Parliament, but requested that the bill be signed first. The Minister of Justice, Mr. Qortbawi, disagreed with this illegal decision. Finally, the highest official in the Government, Mr. Mikati decided to break the “Rule of Law”. He put the illegal draft decree to a political vote. 19 ministers approved it, and it passed. But Hezbollah and the Change and Reform Bloc voted against it. Mr. Salim Jreissati, the newly appointed Minister of Labor said that Mr. Nahas was right but the upcoming phase in Lebanon should be marked by stability. But isn’t the respect of the “Rule of Law” a sign of stability? The philosopher Aristotle who lived in Antiquity wrote: “Law should govern”. In addition, history has shown that the “Rule of Law” is what gives Western Civilizations and Democracies sustainability and oxygen to stay alive. Unfortunately, Mr Mikati thinks that politics should rule.No one has brought the “Change and Reform Bloc” so close to the people as much as Mr. Charbel Nahas has. And with his forced resignation, the hope to provide a brighter future for the younger generations seems far away. The politicians think they won by counting the votes. But as John.F.Kennedy said:”One man with courage makes a majority”. And this man is Charbel Nahas because he stood by the “Rule of Law”. |
