Man hit, killed in a traffic accident

page8a260PHILIPSBURG--The police are investigating the death of a young man who was struck by a station wagon on Wednesday afternoon. The victim was identified as Genrick A. Reid (22), born in Anguilla. He was staying with friends on the Dutch side of the island.

The incident occurred on Coralita Road in the vicinity of People's Supermarket at approximately 3:30pm. The driver of the vehicle, a woman who apparently was travelling towards the Zagersgut junction, remained at the scene after hitting the young man. The blow launched the victim into the nearby water.

Police spokesman Inspector Ricardo Henson said it had not yet been determined whether the victim died from the impact with the car or was still alive, but unconscious, when he hit the water and drowned after lying there face down for some time.

Although police and emergency personnel were present it took a group of citizens to pull the young man's body from the water. Dr. Michael Mercuur declared the young man dead on the spot. The driver of the vehicle was escorted to the police station for questioning.

It remained unclear up to press time how the accident actually occurred, as the investigation is still ongoing.
