Bus strikes islandwide affect commuters

A series of bus strikes demanding the government to scrap the joint time table for private and SLTB buses has caused inconvenience to passengers standing in long queues for hours.

The strikes by private buses  commenced in Kurunegala and Puttlam districts in North-western province where the ministry implemented the joint timetable pilot project.

Several bus routes in Colombo and suburbs are not operating due to strikes.

Meanwhile, all SLTB depots island wide will go on a strike today demanding the government to consider demands of SLTB workers that includes increasing the minimum salary to Rs.11700.

Fifty bus depots have already agreed to go on a strike while the UNP led Jathika Sewaka Sangamaya too has extended its support.
