Resort workers demonstrate at Inter-parliamentary Meeting

PHILIPSBURG--A group of incensed former Pelican Resort Club workers stormed the Sonesta Great Bay Beach Resort and Casino around noon on Thursday to vent their frustrations over the latest developments with their employment status at the Simpson Bay Resort and Marina SBRM (former Pelican Resort Club).

Members of Parliament from across the Kingdom were at the time meeting in the Inter-parliamentary Affairs and Kingdom Relations Conference.

National Alliance (NA) Leader Member of Parliament (MP) William Marlin approached the Dutch delegation and was instrumental in rallying two of the Dutch parliamentarians to listen to the workers. Marlin said his intention was to avoid any unnecessary chaos and flaring of tempers at the meeting.

Due to Marlin's intervention, the workers got a chance to air their views with Leader of the Dutch delegation Brigette van der Burg and vice-delegation leader Marijke

Linthorst, but the two visiting Parliamentarians informed the workers that there was little they could do about their plight.

NA MP George Pantophlet and United People's (UP) Party MP Romain Laville also briefly listened to the workers as they were on their way out of the Inter-Parliamentary meeting to visit Dr. A.C. Wathey Cruise and Cargo Facilities.

Earlier in the day workers had visited the SBRM to enquire about the offer being made to hire 90 of them. They were given application forms to fill out. The workers, however, felt that they should have been offered contracts.

The workers also vented their frustrations over this matter during a meeting with Workers Institute for Organised Labour (WIFOL) President Theophilus Thompson during a meeting at the WIFOL building.

Asked for the union's position on the offer being made by SBRM, Thompson said the offer would be a good one if the rights and benefits of the workers would be maintained and not deteriorate.

Thompson said the union met with its legal advisers on the latest developments. He said while each individual worker has his or her own situations, this was part of the struggle to maintain their jobs and to be compensated properly. He said the union felt that this latest move by the resort is an "invitation for the workers to return to work." He said it was "ridiculous" for the company's attorney to instruct the company not to "deal with" the union as the workers' legal representative.
