A Police curfew has been clamped until 6.00 a.m. tomorrow in Chilaw town as the army moved into the area to provide securirty after a fishermen was killed earlier in the day in police firing durign a demonstration agaisnt the increase of fuel prices.
Earlier in the day some 15,000 fishermen and their families gathered on the beach in Chilaw, in protest, after the fishermen was killed and three others were injured when the STF opened fire at a group of fishermen protesting in Chilaw.
The fishermen were marching from the fish market to the town.
Catholic priests in the area move to prevent a confrontation between the villagers and the security forces and police.
"I can see the protestors on the beach side and the police, STF and army deployed on the otherside. The priests are on the middle of the road to prevent them clashing", a fishermen from the area told Timesonline over the phone when the tension was building up in the area.
The person killed was identified as Warnakulasuriya Anthony Fernando, a 38 year old fisherman.
His body was in the hospital and an army guard was deployed around the location.
Chilaw Mayor Hilary Prasanna told Timesonline that shops have been closed following the incident and more troops are being moved into the area to ensure security.
He said that the injured were brought by boat to hospital across the lagoon in order to prevent tension rising.
He said fishermen have not gone out for fishing for the last three days.
Meanwhile, tension was building up in Negombo, after some of the fishermen had ordered shops and hotels to close down until the funeral was over.
Villagers were putting up black flags in protest.
