The JVP today called for the release of former Army commander Sarath Fonseka and all other political prisoners
JVP Vijitha Herath told a media conference that Mr. Fonseka was being detained as political revenge after he contested the Presidential elections against President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
“All Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim masses in this country have a right to engage in politics. It is a fundamental right of the people. Billions are spent to celebrate the 64th anniversary of the so-called independence. More billions are spent to have ‘Dayata Kirula’ exhibition.
These fiestas are held while Gen. Fonseka has been forcefully adorned with a crown of thorns. Not a single citizen in this country would endorse this act”, he said.
“At present human rights in Sri Lanka are being questioned by the USA, India and western countries at the Human Rights Commission of the UNO. The government, following it usual policy of thuggery tells Sri Lankan audiences that it is not afraid of accusations. The government should immediately stablise democracy and protect fundamental rights of the citizens in the country to prevent western and imperialist interventions and to stop sustenance of separatist ideology”, he said.
He said that a protest campaign has been organised at the Hulftsdorp on February 8 to call for the release of Mr. Fonseka.
