Court turns down police request to prohibit pro-Fonseka protest

The Colombo Chief Magistrate courts today turned down a request from the Police to prohibit a demonstration outside the Courts complex in Hulftsdorp calling for the release of former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka.

The protest is currently in progress and attended by politicians including opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The plea to prohibit today's protest was made by OIC of the Keselwatte Chief Inspector Rohana Gamage. He said the demonstration could disturb the Court functions.

Chief Magistrate Rashmi Singappuli said that the Police had the right to take appropriate action in the event court functions are disturbed.

DIG (Colombo) Anura Senanayake was present in Courts.

Outside the courts complex almost all UNP MPs took part in the protest calling for the release of Mr. Fonseka.

"We are launching the campaign for 'Democracy Plus' from today", Mr. Wickremesinghe told the gathering.

'Release Fonseka', 'No law and order in the country' 'Freedom for Fonseka' were among the slogans in the placards.

Meanwhile Ms Anoma Fonseka and the DNA members are due to have a separate protest.

Police prevented a a large number of people including those attending court sessions to reach courts complex.

DNA MP Vijitha Herath was seen involed in an argument with the police who prevented the public coming closer to the court complex.
