The Colombo Chief Magistrate Rashmi Singappuli today turned down a request from the Cinnamon Gardens police to prohibit a demonstration by student monks of the Buddhist and Pali university.
The Police moved that the public would be inconvenienced if the demonstration was held, but Magistrate said that orders could be given to hold the protest in a peaceful manner and if they fail the police could use their powers to take action against them.
Later in the day some 150 monks marched to the University Grants Commission and handed over a petition.
However Police riot squads were kept prepared.
