Former Maldives President Nasheed apologises to Gayoom

Former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed on Sunday apologized to Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, a former president, for implicating the latter in the alleged coup on February 7, this year.

Nasheed resigned under pressure from the military and opposition parties but later said he was forced by the military and blamed Gayoom as one of those responsible for the alleged coup d’etat that saw Vice President Mohamed Waheed take over the reins.

“I believe now is the time for all parties to come forth in support of the best interest of the nation and its citizens, and as such if President Gayoom indeed was not party to the coup, I have decided to apologise to President Gayyoom for the fact that I said he was behind this coup,” he said in a public statement issued by his Maldives Democratic Party (MDP).

All Party talks have been called to resolve the crisis facing the Maldives and Nasheed said, “… in a predicament such as we are, and whilst the people of Maldives are overtly distressed by what has transpired after the coup, I have come to know that President Gayoom has said that he would sit with me for dialogue in the event I
apologise for stating that it was he who instigated this coup.”

Earlier Nasheed, whose party, has held repeated protests and demonstrations against the ruling administration which it says is illegal, had publicly stated that Gayoom was behind the said coup.

While saying that Gayoom has never denied that he committed these actions on behalf of the political party to which he belonged, nor has he condemned any actions (of the ruling administration), Nasheed noted that his apology was made in the interest of the nation and its people. - Ends =
