PHILIPSBURG--The Council of Ministers took a decision on May 28 to withdraw its decision to appoint Mark Mingo, Veronica Jansen-Webster and former commissioner Rene Richardson to the Supervisory Board of utilities company GEBE.
Prime Minister (PM) Sarah Wescot-Williams forwarded a letter to GEBE Shareholding Foundation Chairman Ralph Richardson on June 18 outlining the council's decision. The reason for the amount of time between the decision and when the letter was sent to Chairman Richardson is unknown, but well-placed sources indicated that the PM did not want to renege on all the nominations for the board.
The nominations were made by the former DP/UP Council of Ministers of which Wescot-Williams was also PM. Mingo, Jansen-Webster and Rene Richardson would have replaced Gregory Richardson, Joseph Dollison and, eventually, Julius Lambert.
While Gregory Richardson and Dollison resigned after the Council of Ministers requested that the foundation seek their resignations, Lambert has stated that he will move on only when his term has concluded on July 8, 2012.
It is unclear whether Lambert will follow through with that, considering that no new nominations have been put forward by the Council of Ministers. Even if there were, it is unlikely that the nominees would make it through vetting by the Corporate Governance Council in time to be appointed before Lambert leaves.
Following the resignations of Gregory Richardson and Dollison, Lambert is currently the sole representative of St. Maarten on the board, with the representatives of Saba and Statia occupying two spots. There has been no indication what Minister is responsible for GEBE or any other government-owned company since the new NA/DP/I-3 government has been in place.
There also has been no information from the Council of Ministers about developments at GEBE and whether the new government is on the same path as the former in terms of the division and transfer of shares of the company.
Efforts to reach Julius Lambert and Ralph Richardson were unsuccessful on Friday.
