UNP withholds bill to restore SF’s civil rights

The United National party (UNP) said today they have decided to withhold a proposed Bill it was seeking to present to Parliament to have the civil rights of former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka restored.

The decision was taken due to a request by Mr. Fonseka not to forward the Bill to Parliament as he does not expect to get any relief by this way.

The Bill had been prepared by a Committee chaired by MP Lakshman Kiriella and consisting MP Wijedasa Rajapaksha and MP Ajith P.Perera.

The copy of the draft Bill which has made available to the media   seeks to  remove the civil disabilities   that have resulted from the convictions of Mr.Fonseka  as well as to set aside  the convictions or sentences pronounced on him during the pride May 18 ,2009 to May, 21, 2012.
