~ Biggest sponsor for Carnival 2012 ~
PHILIPSBURG--United Telecommunication Services (UTS) is once again the biggest corporate sponsor of Carnival. UTS/Chippie donated US $40,000 to St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation (SCDF) to go towards Carnival 2012, a $10,000 increase over the company's contribution of 2011.
UTS/Chippie will be the "Official Mobile Provider" for Carnival 2012, will occupy Booth 79 in Carnival Village, is the official sponsor of all Carnival pageants and will have a number of new promotions and surprises in store in the weeks ahead.
While the contribution to SCDF is significant, UTS Chief Operations Officer (COO) Lyrio Gomez said the company's total financial commitment to Carnival more than doubled what was committed to SCDF.
Gomez said UTS/Chippie was happy to be able again to support not only SCDF, but culture in general in St. Maarten. He said Carnival was already big and he hoped UTS' contribution would go a long way in making it bigger and better for residents and visitors alike. He added that UTS "will be doing a lot of things" for Carnival and assured that St. Maarten "will be very blue," pushing his company's main colour.
SCDF President Stuart Johnson praised UTS for staying true to form and stepping up again as SCDF's biggest corporate sponsor. He thanked and congratulated the UTS team and SCDF for the partnership that had come after professional negotiations and built on a relationship fostered in 2011.
Johnson said the cost of Carnival and its related activities was not inexpensive and UTS' contribution "is definitely welcomed" in helping to put SCDF and Carnival on the right track. "We look forward to continue this terrific relationship with UTS," Johnson said.
SCDF Secretary Michael Granger called UTS a true partner of Carnival and singled out UTS CEO Glen Carty for laying the foundation in 2004 for the current relationship enjoyed by UTS and SCDF. "It was from then that UTS decided to support St. Maarten Carnival significantly and it was due to Glen's persistence and commitment over the years. Our relationship today is a result of his initiatives back then," Granger said.
SCDF also thanked UTS Service Market Manager Michanou Arrundell for being the "creative brain trust" behind their partnership and for being "a consummate professional" during negotiations.
