POINTE BLANCHE--A burning motor vessel drew a lot of attention near the coast of Pointe Blancheon Tuesday. On arrival Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard cutter Poema found the yacht The Urge fully ablaze, according to a press release.
The Coast Guard proceeded to extinguish the fire, but unfortunately the vessel could not be saved and sank shortly afterward. It is not yet known what caused the fire, the Coast Guard stated.
The one person on board was taken to SimpsonBayby sailboat Antara, which was sailing nearby. No casualties were reported.
A buoy was placed to mark the spot where the yacht had sunk. Because it sank in the protected area of St. Maarten Marine Park, Nature Foundation St. Maarten is going to investigate the spot today, Wednesday, for possible damage caused by oil leakage, saidChiefMarineParkRangerEtienneLake.
This is not the first time The Urge has been in the news. The former owner of the 63-foot yacht, American singer-songwriter Jerry Lynn Williams, died on board the vessel in 2005.
The Daily Herald contacted St. Maarten Civil Aviation, Shipping and Maritime Department head Louis Halley, but he could not provide any additional information.
