Christmas Parade sparks controversy

page13a186ST. EUSTATIUS--The annual Red and White Parade, organised by the St. Eustatius Culture Department, ended in some controversy Wednesday afternoon. Participants of NuStar Terminal School were not allowed to take part in the parade because they were not adhering to the required colours of red and white.

A representative of the Terminal School said they were given notice of the fact that they had to wear red and white clothes two weeks prior to the event.

"This meant that some parents had to travel to St. Maarten to purchase white pants because these are not available on the island. That was why our participants wore all kinds of colours, but they were all wearing Santa hats," the spokesperson said.

All persons were requested to wear red and white or they would not be allowed to participate in this year's parade, the Culture Department had stated.

When contacted, Head of the Culture Department Marcella Gibbs-Marsden said the Terminal School delegation came in brown and blue jeans, where white and red had been specified.

During the parade, which had a large turnout, persons could be seen wearing various colours.

The Red and White parade is not a tradition of the island, but has been recently introduced as part of Christmas celebrations.
