Samir Messarra -It is really outrageous to see how some of our Lebanese politicians are behaving towards the tragic events that are happening in Syria. We are saying this not because we like to support the Syrian regime but to safeguard the interest of our nation with all its communities. It is a fact that behaviors such as the ones displayed publically by MM, Walid Joumblatt, Saad Hariri, Amine Gemayel and Samir Geagea are not only direct interventions in the internal affairs of the only Arab neighboring country but also an instigation to promote more violence. Since our childhood, we have been told that Syria has a permanent fear of exploiting the Lebanese territory as a platform to threaten its security and that is why the Syrians feel always the need to have a direct control over Lebanon to prevent any danger on their sovereignty. What our dear politicians are doing is just that. Why are they giving the Syrians once again the pretext of invading Lebanon? What do they gain from this animosity knowing that the successor of the Baath regime might be more oppressive? Why do they think that they can have a role in the political playground of the big powers? Why are they declaring war now that the Syrians are in Syria and they did not do it when the Syrians were in Lebanon? Are they so sure that what is coming to the region is an innocent democracy? Frankly speaking, the four leaders are not only arrogant but nave. They labeled themselves as the custodians of the oppressed Syrian people. But who told them that the majority is against the Assad regime? Or do they really care?We know that they will not listen to the advices of their internal partners to refrain from any interference, because each one of them has a motive that serves his ego. For M. Saad Hariri, it is the illusion of pseudo-revenge to compensate the loss of power that he did to himself. He wants us to be blind and to forget this wonderful picture not long time ago where he embraced warmly President Assad and declared loudly the innocence of his regime from all the assassinations. For M. Walid Joumblatt, it is his habit to swing every now and then hoping to find a place next to the winner despite who this winner is. When the wind blows favorably towards the axis of the resistance, he becomes a front liner in the struggle. When the wind blows the opposite way, he jumps to the other side and starts preaching us about the importance of integrity and loyalty. For M. Amine Gemayel, it is his continuous worry to show that his party has still a word to say. The grey area is his best choice. He is with and against everyone not being able to make a difference. Finally for M. Samir Geagea who forgot his alliance with the Syrian regime when both of them shelled the presidential palace in Baabda to overthrow the legal government of General Michel Aoun, it is his wish to replace one day the only national true leader who still inspires a lot of Lebanese and continues to win their trust.Bob Nelson once said: ?You get the best of people not by lighting a fire beneath them, but by building a fire within them?. Unfortunately MM. Joumblatt, Hariri, Gemayel and Geagea; if you do not know how to build a fire within each one of us to reinforce constructive dialogue and national unity; please step aside and let other leaders do it. |
