Planning underway for opening Cay Bay road to alleviate traffic

page8a127CAY BAY--Government is still considering opening the Cay Bay/Indigo Bay road to alleviate traffic congestion in the Simpson Bay/Cole Bay area.

Stakeholders conducted a site inspection of the area on Thursday to determine what would be needed and how long it would take for Contractor Windward Roads to prepare a road to be used through Cay Bay, past the GEBE power plant, through the Bell's property and Indigo Bay and exit at the roundabout at the top of Cole Bay Hill.

The road would be one way from Cay Bay to Philipsburg. Present at the site inspection were members of the police force, representatives of the Bell family, Assistant to Minister Theo Heyliger Maurice Lake, Roderick Halley, representatives from the contractor, Indigo Bay and others.

By all indications, it would take Windward Roads about two weeks to prepare a road with proper safety measures in place. Additionally, the intention is to only have the road opened from 6:00am to 6:00pm.

The Daily Herald understands that Government does not want to take the risk and leave the road open when it gets dark since there is no lighting infrastructure along the route.

The animals of Roderick Halley will also be considered in the plan. All parties will now consult and continue discussions and government should have a decision by next week.
