Construction starts for new Belvedere school

page4b106BELVEDERE--VROMI Minister Theo Heyliger, Education Minister Rhoda Arrindell and various education officials broke ground Monday afternoon for the construction of a new public elementary school in Belvedere, which will be constructed by Beton Caribbean Construction NV.

The bidding process having been finalised and the relevant contracts signed on August 24, Beton launched the project at the beginning of this month and hopes to complete it by October 2012.

The school will consist of eight classrooms and will have an IT room, library, art room and gym.

Senior Beton representative Kleyn noted that the company's labour force for this project included young local students who would receive on-the-job training. At the conclusion of the project the students will receive certificates paving the way for their employment in the construction field.

Head of Public Education Glenderlin Davis-Holiday noted that Beton had presented a budget of NAf. 4,982,000. Local Government provided 70 per cent of the financing for the project, while Dutch funding agency USONA provided the remainder. She said Public Education "guarantees a school second to none."

VROMI New Projects Development and Planning Department Head Kurt A. Ruan noted 9,000 square metres or approximately 2 acres of land had been allocated for the school. The property located in the vicinity of the Belvedere Community Centre will be divided into two 4,000-square-metre plots allocated for the elementary school, with expansion possibilities for four additional classrooms.

Minister Heyliger confirmed that the remainder of the land would be used to construct a new public secondary school. "It is a priority of Government," he said, while noting that this was the third school currently under construction or refurbishment.

Minister Arrindell said it was most exciting to note that local young boys were being given the opportunity for employment through this project.

Innovations in Education Director Angela Dekker said 20 students were enrolled in the job training, during which they would work four times a week. Ten students are employed by Beton in Belvedere and the other 10 by Taliesin Construction on the construction of another school in Cay Hill.
