Tropical storm forces flight cancellations

AIRPORT--As expected, a number of flights to and from St. Maarten were cancelled due to the passing of Tropical Storm Maria over the weekend, though cancellations were not as extensive as when Hurricane Irene was in the area a few weeks ago.

Most of the major carriers such as American Airlines, JetBlue and WestJet are offering customers the convenience of changing their plans. Customers ticketed to travel on flights to/from/through the airports affected were given the opportunity to change flights.

JetBlue, for example, will waive change fees and fare increases to allow passengers who booked travel prior to Friday, September 9, 2011, to or from select islands in the Caribbean, to voluntarily rebook their travel through either Wednesday, September 14 or Thursday, September 15, 2011.

Some of the other airlines have similar offers in place. Passengers are urged to check with their travel agents or the airline Website regarding flight information. Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIA) remained open, as the storm never posed a significant threat.
