Father arrested for killing his daughter, setting body on fire

page1bPHILIPSBURG--Sources state that the father of the late Tiffany Reid was treated at St. Maarten Medical Center around 8:30pm Tuesday for burns on his arms that he alleges came from his vehicle's radiator. Around the same time, 8:10pm, police reported to the scene of a burning corpse that had been dumped in a ravine on Cherrynut Hill between Reward and St. Peters.

The father was arrested in Middle Region around 11:00pm after he and the mother of his child left the police station after reporting their daughter as missing. The mother played a crucial role in demanding that the father report the missing child.

Police confiscated the vehicle and searched the father's home in Nazareth. Sources also indicated that Tiffany Reid's father had been transported via ambulance from Nazareth to the hospital.

Police confirmed on Wednesday that they had received reports of a missing girl from the father, who had visible burn marks. However, they did not confirm whether the burnt body was that of Tiffany Reid.

While on the crime scene Wednesday night, the Attorney General was seen approaching the ravine where the body had been found.

The body found Tuesday night is believed to be that of Tiffany Bianca Reid (13), a St. Maarten Academy PSVE student. Her father is of Jamaican descent and had acquired a position driving St. Joseph School pupils home after classes finished at the school.

A representative of the school who wished to remain anonymous confirmed that the father indeed had driven pupils from the school, but said he was employed by parents, not St. Joseph School. The representative also told The Daily Herald that Tiffany's father had not reported to dismissal on Wednesday.

Police and the Prosecutor's Office said several police patrols, detectives, the Forensic Department and the Fire Department had been directed on Tuesday at approximately 8:20pm to Reward Road in the vicinity of Pumpkin Road, where the severely burnt body of a person had been found in a ravine.

The body in question was located deep in the ravine. It was removed and brought up to Reward Road with the assistance of the Fire Department. The body turned out to be that of a young female, but because of the state of the body, her identity and age could not be established.

Shortly afterwards, while the investigation was ongoing at the crime scene, the detectives received a call from the Central Dispatch informing them that a couple with the initials E.J. and R.R., both born in Jamaica, had been at the police station and had filed a report that their 13-year-old daughter T.R. was missing. After filing this report, the couple had left.

According to the officer in charge at the police station, the father who filed the "missing person report" had severe burns on several parts of his body. This information was shared with the detectives who are conducting the investigation. Orders to locate and apprehend this person were given immediately to the other patrols on the streets.

This suspect/the father was arrested in the Middle Region area by a police patrol around 11:00pm and taken to the Philipsburg police station, where he is being held in custody. The body of the victim has been confiscated for further investigation.

The investigation is still in its preliminary stage. The identity of the victim has to be established. As information becomes available in the course of the investigation, the media will be informed, police said.

The Police Force is asking anyone who may have any information that could help in this investigation to contact them.

According to Tiffany Bianca Reid's Facebook page, her religious views were those of a "New Testament Christian" and her favourite athlete was Lebron James of the Miami Heat. Her interests included dancing and singing, and among her favourite movies was "Step Up 3," a romance that focuses on two dance partners falling in love.
