Pantophlet suggests toll to cross border

~ Charge cruisers extra dollar for sports maintenance ~

PHILIPSBURG--A toll for vehicles crossing the border has been suggested by National Alliance (NA) Member of Parliament George Pantophlet as a means of generating income for the governments of St. Maarten and St. Martin.

Explaining his suggestion to The Daily Herald on Friday, Pantophlet said he didn't see the introduction of a toll as a de facto border checkpoint and likened the situation to the toll-ways in the United States.

He said the toll would be "nominal" and would not have a huge effect on the wider population because not everyone moved between the two sides every day.

He said this was just a preliminary suggestion and he would welcome input from the community. He said he was aware that this would require consultations with the French side and the passing of uniform laws to make the toll possible and regulated.

Turning his attention to the cruise tourism industry, Pantophlet said government was "always boasting" about more than one million cruise passengers visiting the country annually and this should be turned into a further benefit for the community.

"We can charge US $1 per person and this can go to the maintenance of sporting facilities and our roads," he suggested. If his proposal is taken up by government, cruise lines would have to pay $7 per cruise passenger: the cruise passenger head tax of $5, the "security fee" of $1 and the $1 sports maintenance fee suggested by Pantophlet.

He also renewed his call for the installation of parking metres, which would entail changes to the Traffic Ordinance to make this possible.
