Storm Warning discontinued, regular school, business day

Page1D082CAY HILL--The tropical storm warning for St. Maarten, issued on Saturday night, was discontinued at 5:00pm on Sunday by the Office of Disaster Management (ODM) in conjunction with the Meteorological Department of Curaao (MDC) after Tropical Storm Irene moved closer to the US Virgin Islands.

As a result, today is a normal school and business day for St. Maarten.

Small Craft Advisory had remained in effect until 6:00am today.

The ocean is expected to remain rough through this morning as a few rain bands will continue to move over the local region, causing periods with thundershowers. Some flooding of low-lying areas could still occur because of heavier showers, according to the MDC bulletin issued at 5:00pm Sunday. Wave heights are to near 10 feet this morning continuing the trend seen throughout Sunday.

Tropical Storm Irene continued to move away from St. Maarten, St. Eustatius and Saba on Sunday evening with sustained winds at 51 miles per hour (mph). Gusts up to 68 mph were observed early Sunday afternoon in Cay Hill.

ODM maintains its advice to residents to avoid low-lying areas during heavy rainfall, look out for possible street flooding and drive with caution. If the rainfall is persistent, watch out for possible rock falls while driving along hillsides.
