�Update - Damages in Alawwa rail accident estimated at Rs. 75 million


The Transport Ministry today estimated the damages of the Alawwa railway accident at Rs. 75 million as the death toll remained at three� with two more serious.

Deputy Minister of Transport Rohana Dissanayake told the Sunday Times that a specially appointed panel, headed by Railways General Manager B. A. P. Ariyaratna, will be investigating the incident.

Thirty others were �30 others injured, when a Polgahawela bound train from Colombo Fort rammed into the rear of another train heading in the same direction for Kandy, Railway officials said a short while ago.

They said the incident took place around 5.00 pm at Alauwa Junction close to the signal lights.

Among the dead were the driver of the ill-fated train and an unidentified foreign national, the officials said.

They said that rescue workers were using heavy machinery to remove the train engine that has got embedded into the observation car of the Kandy bound train.

Officials suspect that there may be others trapped inside the wreckage.

The injured persons are being currently treated at the Kurunegala hospital.

According to reports the observation carriage of the Kandy bound intercity express had sustained extensive damages in the crash.
