CAY HILL--"Get Off the Block" participant Sheldon Thomas (26) was shot in the head and killed in the Cay Hill area Friday morning.
A passerby noticed Thomas's body lying near the bush bordering Alexis Arnell Road around 5:30am. Police were contacted and arrived shortly afterward to begin their third homicide investigation in three days.
Residents of Cay Hill heard the sound of a gun around 3:45am. It has been confirmed that Thomas, a resident of St. Peters, suffered at least one gunshot to the head.
Thomas reportedly had come into contact with police several times before in the past. Trying to turn a new leaf and stay away from the crime scene, Thomas had joined the "Get Off the Block, Get on the Bus, Get Busy" GB3 Project recently and had impressed some of the programme's key players.
GB3 coordinator Jeffrey Richardson said, "We are very saddened by his death and our condolences go out to his loved ones. Thomas had taken great strides in getting a 'second chance.' He was truly motivated to turn things around for himself and showed much enthusiasm."
Thomas was the MC of a motivational concert for former prisoners and youth enlightenment at Port de Plaisance on April 9. Richardson said Thomas had been "coming along" and his death, and all of the other recent homicides, should deter the youth immensely from choosing an unconstructive lifestyle.
There was no indication up to Friday night as to whether this latest homicide case is connected in any way with the other recent homicide cases ? including two earlier this week.
There was no word from either the Prosecutor's Office or the police on Friday about progress being made in their investigation.
