OYSTER POND--Around thirty officers raided an erotic entertainment club on Wednesday around 6:00am after the judge of instruction gave the order based on information communicated to the police regarding the club's "labour circumstances."
Chief Prosecutor Hans Mos stated in a press release that a strong indication of human-smuggling had surfaced as well.
The only person arrested in connection with any allegations made to police about the "labour circumstances" or possible human-trafficking violations ? punishable by up to five years in prison ? was the club's registered owner I.E., who is also known by a first name with initial A. Undisclosed amounts of money and documents were confiscated from the club.
The labour employees primarily carry out at the club is sexual intercourse with primarily men who visit the club and pay for the service. The exchange of money for sex is legal in St. Maarten under certain conditions. Almost all the woman in the erotic entertainment clubs in St. Maarten are temporary workers from abroad.
Police spokesman Inspector Ricardo Henson directed calls from this newspaper to Chief Prosecutor Hans Mos, who would neither confirm nor deny whether the "labour circumstances" were connected with the treatment of the labourers. Mos said that making additional information public, would hinder the investigation into the club's operations.
