Large counterfeit catch destroyed

page1a279SUCKER GARDEN--Customs Marshal Karl Arndell, in cooperation with REACT Caribbean, has seized more than a thousand articles of counterfeit clothing and handbags in St. Maarten.

Counterfeit items of an array of different brands were burned to ashes in an incinerator at a private location in Sucker Garden on Wednesday around 9:30pm. The items were destroyed to remove them from the local market.

REACT Caribbean is an arm of the European Anti-Counterfeiting Network, a non-profit organisation with more than 20 years experience in fighting counterfeit trade. With more than 175 members covering all areas of industry, including fashion and merchandising, tobacco, electronics and mobile phones, pharmaceuticals, football and toys, REACT has experience in dealing with almost all areas of trademark infringement.

After trips to Aruba and Cura�ao, representatives of REACT Caribbean came to St. Maarten in January to identify any counterfeit items carrying their trademarks. The bags and the clothing accessories were seized from a store on Front Street and three on Back Street in Philipsburg.

Counterfeit items incinerated carried Lacoste, Tommy Hilfiger, Playboy Enterprises, Chanel, Abercrombie & Fitch, New Era Cap, Lois Vuitton, Tiffany and Company, The Polo Ralph Lauren Company, S. Tous, Adidas, Reebok, Hollister, Christian Dior, Marc Jacobs, and Bvlgari labels.
