U.S. Embassy silent over arrest

The U.S. Embassy in Colombo yesterday distanced itself from the arrest of two its citizens who were detained at the Katunayake International Airport (KIA) along with a firearm on Wednesday this week.

Officials with the U.S. Embassy in Colombo said that the matter was being treated by the local police and other authorities and it will remain that way.

"The embassy has not intention to get involved in any manner and it is a matter for the local officials to look into it’, the officials said without elaborating.

The two unidentified men were first nabbed by the Customs Authority and later handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The CID could not be reached today for comment in this connection. (LB)
