US urges Lanka to make use of UN report to address accountability issues

The United States has urged Sri Lanka to make use of the UN experts panel's report to address accountability issues arising from the last stages of the war against the separatist LTTE in 2009.

Answering questions at a State Department news conference, Acting spokesman Mark C. Toner said: "We, obviously, have encouraged the Sri Lankan Government to engage in a process of accountability and to also use this panel of experts and their expertise, obviously, to address some of the questions."
Asked whether the U.S. believed Sri Lanka's Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission was sufficient to address theissue, the spokesman said the U.S. believed the LLRC was a good step.
"We believe that the Lessons Learnt commission and Reconciliation commission were good steps. But we believe also that the UN Panel of Experts is a useful asset and should be taken advantage of by the government."
The Panel of Experts handed over its report to the UN Secretary-General on Tuesday. The UN also shared a copy with the Sri Lankan government. The Sri Lankan government has dismissed the report as 'flawed and biased'.
