PHILIPSBURG--Rudolf Baetsen, the man nominated to take the helm of the Supervisory Board of the Central Bank of Curaao and St. Maarten, has asked Curaao Prime Minister Gerrit Schotte to withdraw his name due to the controversy that ignited over his nomination.
Baetsen told The Daily Herald on Monday afternoon that he wrote to Schotte last week withdrawing his name. He added that although he was "honoured" by the nomination this was "a time for nation building" and not controversy.
When Baetsen's nomination was made public over a week ago as "a joint candidate" of the two countries by Curaao Finance Minister George Jamaloodin, this caused much outcry from people on both islands because he is currently the Chief Financial Officer of Atlantis World Group, a company that operates casinos on St. Maarten, Curaao and the Dominican Republic.
The coalition partners MFK, PS and MAN in Curaao's Parliament had issued an urgent call via a letter on Friday to its Council of Ministers to withdraw the decision to appoint Baetsen and to inform St. Maarten that its nomination of former Lt. Governor/Attorney Ralph Richardson as board member was "undesirable."
Asked about the concerns expressed about Richardson, Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams said Monday afternoon that government had not received any formal communication from the Government of Curaao that there is an issue with any of this island's proposed candidates.
St. Maarten's other two candidates for the supervisory board are businessman Robbie Ferron and tax consultant Maricella Illidge.
Curaao's candidates are University of the Netherlands Antilles (UNA) lecturer Reny Maduro, former Netherlands Antilles Parliamentarians for Forsa Curaao Glenn Camelia and Nelson Navarro. Camelia and Navarro are attorneys by profession.
There is also some talk, especially from PS leader Helmin Wiels, that St. Maarten should not have been allotted three seats ? the same number as Curaao - on the Central Bank Supervisory Board. His argument is Curaao has more investment in the bank.
Responding to the argument on the seat division, Wescot-Williams said the division has been agreed on for some time now based on negotiation and it still stands.
