PHILIPSBURG--The amended 2011 budget will be up for discussion and approval by the Council of Ministers today, Tuesday, as the April 15 deadline draws closer.
Finance Minister Hiro Shigemoto and personnel from the Committee for Financial Supervision CFT had worked on adjustments to the budget until late last week. The final touches to the document were made by Shigemoto and the Finance Ministry on Monday.
Once the amended budget is approved by the Council of Ministers, it will be sent to CFT for its nod of approval. CFT will check to ensure the budget is truly balanced and that it complies with criteria in the Kingdom Law on Financial Supervision for Curaao and St. Maarten.
CFT Secretary Geert Bergsma told The Daily Herald on Monday that all the information requested of government by CFT had been provided to aid the discussions last week.
"When we know the conclusion of the Council of Ministers and we get the amended budget, we will look into it," he said.
Government had assured Dutch Minister for Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations Piet Hein Donner on April 4 that the country would have a balanced budget that met the criteria of the law by April 15. That is also the day the Kingdom Council of Ministers will meet and possibly look at issuing an instruction to government about fixing the budget, if an agreement is not reached with CFT.
