Semsamar to invest 3M euros in upgrading social housing

Page9b243MARIGOT--The mixed capital company Semsamar is to invest three million euros in renovating social housing over the next two years, in the main areas of French Quarter and Concordia, Marigot, following a meeting last Monday with the tenant associations.

Tenants have consistently complained about the state of their apartments, some of which are located in buildings more than 15 years old.

President of Semsamar Louis Mussington noted that the bidding process for the work would take place in May, after which the retained contractors could begin.

"It's in keeping with our policy to keep our tenants satisfied and comfortable," Mussington told The Daily Herald. "We have also decided to produce a newsletter, the first issue of which will come out next week. Each tenant will receive it and the idea behind this is to improve communication between tenants and management of Semsamar and to facilitate the dispensing of information to them."

He said the tenants associations had been very receptive to the proposals for renovating the apartments and the news that meetings between the two parties would be held regularly to address concerns.

"It opens the way for clear dialogue between the tenants, their presidents and the management of Semsamar," Mussington added.

In addition, an individual has been hired by Semsamar to work in an intermediary capacity. This person will have meetings with tenants and report back to the board of Semsamar about any problems and concerns.

He disclosed that there was also a policy whereby tenants occupying apartments for 10 years would have first preference in purchasing any of 82 new apartments in the future.

On a separate subject, Mussington said Semsamar had donated 12,072 euros to the Speedy Plus athletic club last week to assist the athletes in their competitive endeavours.

Mussington and Semsamar project director Ren-Jean Duret were at Princess Juliana International Airport on Tuesday to see off seven of the club's athletes and their coach Calvin Bryan. In the group was Derisha Jeffers, who will compete at an event in Hamburg, Germany, with the France team. She will also compete in a championship event in Aubires, France, where she will be joined by six other Speedy Plus athletes.
