FR petition by printing press owner withdrawn

A Fundamental Rights petition filed by an owner of a printing press who allegedly printed posters defamatory of� President Mahinda Rajapkasa today withdrew the petition on the grounds that he has already been discharged in the case filed against him in the Gangodawila Magistrate's Courts.

Senior State Counsel� Shanka Wijesinghe today informed the Supreme Court that the Attorney General's department is not proceeding in the case against the owner of the printing press as the Inspector General of Police has already issued a circular that no one should be arrested under Emergency Regulations for printing or pasting posters.

The owner of the printing press Jayampathy Bulathsinhala� was arrested after police found a set of posters printed against the proposed 18th Amendment.� Under the Amendment the restrictions on the President contesting for a third term was removed.

The contract to print the posters was given by� UNP MP Mangala Samaraweera and was due to be used in an opposition campaign against the passing of the 18th Amendment.

The FR petition was filed challenging the arrest.� Among the respondents were ASP at the Mirihana police,� Nishantha Soysa and the� IGP.

The bench comprised of� Shirani Thilakawardena and K. Sripavan.

Sailiya Peiris appeared for the Petitioner.
