Timeshare association works to accommodate Pelican owners

PHILIPSBURG--The St. Maarten Timeshare Association (SMTA), with the assistance of the St. Maarten Hospitality and Trade Association (SHTA) and others, is working on accommodating all Pelican owners who might be displaced as a result of the pending closure of Simpson Bay Resort and Marina (formerly Pelican Resort Club).

The SMTA has pulled its members together in the past to accommodate St. Maarten timeshare owners at maintenance fee rates when a resort has had to close rooms or shut down due to hurricane damage. Each resort charged the incoming party its own maintenance fee.

"We have no idea how long this will take to play out, but the immediate concern is the thousands of people who have their airfare and vacations set for the near term. Our goal is to help all of them," the SMTA said.

"The SMTA is working to support the timeshare owners of Simpson Bay Resort, as Pelican had always been there to support other resorts that had temporary closures. The majority of the timeshare resorts have already committed to take in Pelican owners at the individual resort's maintenance fee rates, based upon availability.

"Given that for the next several weeks we are mostly sold, the SMTA has gotten commitments from hotels on the Dutch side and we have also approached the French side to offer deeply discounted rates. Maho and Great Bay hotels, which have long histories of assisting St. Maarten, have committed to help."

A special 800 number will be set up by Monday afternoon to begin accommodating the owners. The SMTA will post this number and the list of participating hotels on its Website by Monday afternoon. The rates will not be published, to protect the hotels. Ownership will have to be verified to receive the rates.
