Rs. 16 million for dead seaman?s family

The family of a seaman who died on duty in September last year receiver US$ 158,000 approximately SLR 16 million as compensation, a senior official with the International Transport workers Federation (ITF) said today.

Ordinary Seaman, Benedict Perera died under unexplained circumstances while on Voyage in Central America on a Malta flagged vessel, ITF Inspector Ranjan Perera said.

He said the compensation money was handed over to his wife on Thursday this week.

The ITF along with the Total Crew Cost (TCC) had worked for several months to get this compensation for the victim’s family, he said.

The compensation was paid by the Protection and Indemnity Club that is headquartered in London. (LB)
