USONA to provide NAf. 540,000 to furnish two police substations

page1a018PHILIPSBURG--Justice Minister Roland Duncan signed a NAf. 540,000 financing agreement with funding agency USONA on Wednesday for the furnishing of the police substation in Belvedere and the one on the Labega property along L.B. Scott Road.

Duncan said that although it might seem a little strange to sign for furniture before the buildings were ready, the negotiations with the owners of the properties were progressing. St. Maarten Housing Development Foundation owns the property in Belvedere. The intention is for the property owners to construct the substations based on specifications from the Justice Ministry.

Two additional substations are to be built: one in Cole Bay close to the border and one in Cupecoy, also close to the border.

Duncan also announced Wednesday that an agreement had been reached with Sonesta Maho to open a police office in the Royal Islander building. The community police for this area will operate out of that office and patrols will be coordinated from that location. He said other such offices would be established at various locations to complement the substations.

Duncan thanked USONA for providing the funding and said he was looking forward to additional contributions. Present at the signing were Dutch Representative in Philipsburg Marcie Jonkers, police spokesman Inspector Ricardo Henson and USONA representative Angela Dekker.

All three called the substation initiative a good and important step for St. Maarten and law enforcement, and lauded the ability the police soon would have to react quickly and directly in the various communities. Jonkers said it was good to see initiatives from St. Maarten to build up its Police Force.

Duncan estimates that construction time for the substations will be about one year from whenever construction commences.
