Visitors to prisons will have to use phones installed to speak to inmates, instead of speaking face to face through a wire-mesh as done now.
The measure is being taken as a security precaution after authorities found that visitors were exchanging items to prisoners through the current system.
The visitors will be able to see the prisoner through a glass, but will have to use the phone to speak to him or to her.
Prison Reforms Minister Chandrasiri Gajadeera said that currently the system is practiced in many foreign countries.
