GEBE, VROMI, police tackle electricity theft

PHILIPSBURG--Power and water utility N.V. GEBE, the Ministry of Public Housing, Spatial Development, Environment and Infrastructure VROMI and the Police Force have started a joint investigation in connection with the stealing of electricity.

Police spokesman Inspector Ricardo Henson disclosed Monday that GEBE had filed several complaints to date and several suspects already had been arrested, questioned and released pending further investigation.

He said the reports on the investigations would be submitted to the Prosecutor's Office, which would summon the suspects to appear in court at a later date.

The joint action involving GEBE, which is responsible for the production and distribution of electricity, the police and VROMI stems from a decision taken by GEBE to take action against those persons or businesses found tampering illegally with the electricity meters in some form or another and disrupting the meters from registering the correct amount of electricity being used by meter holders.

VROMI has been tasked with inspecting the connections that were made by GEBE. If there is evidence of illegal tampering with electricity meters an official report will be filed with the police, who will then start a criminal investigation, Henson explained.
